I looked over at my husband who was staring at the T.V. screen with that same torturous look as I felt inside. He glanced over at me, while shaking his head and admitting, “I’m not into it. Are you?” I had only been going through the motions so I wouldn’t mess up our Sunday night ritual. We’d slowly been sucked into the hype of the show’s family drama with a story line that lingered for weeks towards a resolution I really didn’t care to follow. I wondered why these glorified thugs have such a following. Are we just thankful our lives are at least better than theirs?
And who are these women who’ve been put on a reality pedestal and bought into their own self-importance? Most of them aren’t even close to representing real women with their fake lashes, coon eyes, plastic features, and extensions that look redicKulous. (Hey, wasn’t that Phaedra’s stripper?) The women are like puppets for men. Side note: Have you seen Marie Osmond’s ‘go big or go home’ lips? People can’t even talk anymore because of their inflated lips. Historians, or more likely pop culture journalists compiling a magazine spread, will look back at this period of time where money and vanity collided with surgical innovation to produce a bunch of plastic freaks. There’s a reason the Barbie faded in popularity. She’s not what we idolize. The ideal woman is you and me. Real women with real exteriors.
I could go on and on. There’s Nene (no introduction needed) who’s graduated from the ghetto and works to perfect her bourgeois tone now that she's a crossover "star." Then there’s Tamra (O.C.) who doesn’t eat to play the part of exercise maven. I can’t forget to mention Melissa who thinks she’s an expert on marriage after just passing the seven year itch marker. Any man would stay happy with a doting wife who was a regular reservoir for his poison juice. Pleasing Tarzan is no mystery. My critique isn’t intended to bash the characters, which are what they’ve become, but to awaken our senses to the Bravo machine, now second in line to the Oprah effect. Who are these women and why do we care? Disclaimer: Some of the women are more admirable than others.
